Flower Care Tips
A few simple steps will help your flowers stay fresh, hydrated, and beautiful for as long as possible.
- Start with a clean container
Use a vase or container that is clean, sanitized, and free of debris. Clean containers reduce bacteria in the water, which helps stems absorb water more efficiently and extends vase life.
- Give stems a fresh cut
Before placing flowers in water, trim about ½ inch off the bottom of each stem. Stems can dry slightly during transport, and exposing fresh tissue helps improve water uptake. Use clean, sharp scissors or pruners for a smooth cut.
- Use plenty of water
Flowers are very thirsty when they first arrive. Place them in a full vase of clean water and check water levels daily, especially during the first couple of days. Freshly cut flowers are still very much alive and actively drinking.
- Remove foliage below the water line
Any leaves or foliage sitting in water can break down quickly, encouraging bacterial growth. Keeping stems clear below the water line helps keep the water clean and the flowers fresh longer.
- Keep flowers cool and out of direct sunlight
Display flowers in a cool area away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and appliances. Cooler conditions slow aging and help extend vase life.
- Keep flowers away from ripening fruit
Ripening fruits and vegetables release natural gases that can shorten the life of cut flowers. Storing flowers away from fruit helps them last longer.
- Refresh the water regularly
Change the water every 2–3 days, or sooner if it becomes cloudy. Fresh water reduces bacteria and keeps stems hydrated.
- Re-cut stems when changing water
Each time you refresh the water, trim the stems slightly to maintain good water uptake.
- Use flower food if desired
Commercial flower food can help support hydration and longevity for some arrangements. If using flower food, follow the instructions provided and always start with clean water and a clean container.
